2-night overnight WINTER camp kit list

  • Rucksack
  • Full uniform (please ensure your Scout arrives in this)
    • Shirt
    • Polo shirt (if you have one)
    • Scarf
    • Woggle
  • Water bottle (labelled)
  • 2+ Fleece sweaters – Multiple layers will keep you warmer than one thick one and it is easier to strip them off. Fleeces are great for keeping warm and also have the advantage of being warm while wet. Hoodies are not as good as fleeces, but can be added as an extra layer.
  • 3 Thermal T-Shirts (long sleeve ideally) 1 to get change into on Saturday plus a spare 1 and 1 clean one for Sunday
  • 2 pairs of trousers (not jeans)
    • Hiking trousers are preferable as they dry quickest, joggers are warmest
  • 3 pairs of pants / knickers
  • 6 pairs of warm socks (They will want to wear a fresh pair at night and will need to change them if they get wet – ski socks work well and are available reasonably cheaply from amazon)
  • Thermal underwear/ tights (recommended)- We use the Mountain Equipment Talus thermals when skiing and I rate them, but there are loads available relatively cheaply. Bat’s pro tip is to use tights and leggings
  • Warm pyjamas
  • 1 pair of Trainers – Please ensure that they do not bring their newest, favourite trainers – they will get worn a lot and dirty over the weekend
  • 1 pair of walking boots / outdoor boots / wellies – Good boots will usually keep feet warmer than wellies. Skip uses construction site boots on camp, but they tend to be heavier
  • Winter coat & Waterproof trousers – It is really important that they stay dry. The trousers also add an extra layer for warmth and keep the wind off. If they have salopettes by all means bring them, but they will get dirty and smoky
  • 2 Woolly hats (one for night time and in case the other one gets wet)
  • 2 Pairs of waterproof Gloves – ideally waterproof skiing type ones. I used the ones you can get cheaply from petrol stations for skiing for many years. If your scout suffers from cold hands, a pair of woolly gloves to go underneath works well. If your Scout is prone to loosing things, a long piece of elastic threaded through the sleeves works well.
  • Fleece neck gaiters/ snoods (Optional) – Bat endorsed for stopping heat loss though exposed skin on the neck and Skip uses these for sailing and skiing and highly recommends. Even the thin ‘Buff’ ones are great for helping retain heat. Poundland on the high street has fleecy ones relatively cheaply at the moment
  • Tissues
  • Mug, Plate, Bowl, Knife, Fork, Spoon & 2 Tea Towels – The Scouts will be doing their own cooking (patrols will take it in turns), washing up and drying up – no exceptions
  • Sleeping mat / Roll Mat – They will be very cold if they don’t take one
  • 4 season Sleeping bag – It will be cold at night and they will need a warm sleeping bag. If they don’t have a 4 season bag, the should get away with a 3 season bag + a fleece liner and a blanket.
  • Fleece sleeping Bag Liner (optional)
  • Blanket
  • Pillow – If they can carry one. Alternatively a cotton bag which they fill with their coat and spare jumpers works well
  • Plastic Bags for storing dirty items and keeping clothes dry (Bin liner size).
  • Watch – Very important and can be bought quite cheaply. The Scouts will need this to know what time to be at activities and to know in the night when they should go back to sleep (and not wake up their tent mates or Skip!)
  • Torch (Head torch preferred) And spare batteries!!
  • Quiet time activity – Book, magazine, small card game
  • Wash kit
    • Toothbrush and Toothpaste
    • Towel and Soap (we can at least pretend that they will use it)
    • Hair brush / comb / hair bands as required
    • Deodorant (For those who are old enough to need it – also known as the ‘squaddie shower!’
  • Pen, Pencil & small notepad
  • Pen knife (if they have one) – This must be named and ideally clipped to them
  • One rubble sack size bag of wood – We will be cooking on and using fire to stay warm and will need lots of dry wood
  • Money – There will be lots of tat merchandise as well as a hot chocolate and pizza van (£7 each) for the scouts to spend their pocket money on. We want to encourage the Scouts to be responsible with their money (looking after it themselves), but can run a ‘camp bank’ if parents ask in advance. We strongly encourage that Scouts don’t ‘lend’ each other money as this leads to fallings out.
  • Medication (these must be clearly labelled with child’s name and directions to administer). Please hand to the Leader in charge on arrival for it be securely stored.

Equipment Notes

Here is some basic information regarding some of the items you may require / should be aware of.

  • Sleeping Bags
Synthetic filled bags are easier to clean than natural filling.
Zips can be a source of cold if no baffle is fitted.
Summer sleeping bags are not suitable as nights are always chilly on camp.
Go for a 300gsm minimum rating if possible.
  • Bed Rolls
Suggest the new style self inflating mattress.
  • Footwear
    Trainer shoes for field games.
Boots give a better ankle support and normally have better soles than shoes if you are hiking.
  • Warm Wear
A number of layers is warmer than one thick one and the warmth can be regulated more easily – do not forget your hands and head.
  • Torch
Do not pack your torch with batteries fitted (or at the bottom of your kit) as it could easily get accidentally turned on and you will arrive at the camp/holiday with flat batteries.
  • Jewellery
Earrings, nose rings, and other decorative jewellery are NOT recommended on camps and activities.
